OREGON®

This Chain Terminology section is provided to help you in ordering the correct chain for your saw. Pitch

Pitch. A chain's pitch is determined by measuring the distance between the centers of any 3 consecutive rivets and dividing by two.

Gauge Gauge. The gauge of a chain is the thickness of the drive link measured at the tang. It's essential that the drive link thickness correctly matches the width of the groove in the guide bar. Normal ear makes it difficult to accurately measure drive link thickness on used chain. Always order by the number stamped on either the side link or drive link or your old chain to assure correct gauge.

Kerf

Kerf. Kerf is width of the cut in the wood make by the saw chain. Optimum kerf for a chain is dependent on the saw horsepower, chain speed, length of the guide bar and the size, hardness and type of timber being cut. OREGON® chain is available with the ideal kerf for every combination of equipment and timber.
